I have sat on the Welsh Affairs Select Committee since November 2007. In that time we have run enquiries on cross Border Provision of Public Services, Globalisation, and Digital Inclusion.

Since the Government of Wales Act 2006 the Welsh Affairs Select Committee has been responsible for secrutinising requests that come from the National Assembly for Wales for powers to be transfered to them, known as Legislative Competence Orders. The Assembly can apply to have powers transferred in any of the following areas;

  • Agriculture, fisheries, forestry and rural development
  • Ancient monuments andhistoric buildings
  • Culture
  • Economic development
  • Education and training
  • Environment
  • Fire and rescue servicesand promotion of fire safety
  • Food
  • Health and health services
  • Highways and transport
  • Housing
  • Local government
  • National Assembly forWales
  • Public administration
  • Social welfare
  • Sport and recreation
  • Tourism
  • Town and country planning
  • Water and flood defence
  • Welsh language
The committee is responsible for examining the LCOs to make sure they will do what they are designed to. So far the committee has approved all requests laid before it, and despite press and popular perception none have been amended significantly.
